Powering credit unions across Atlantic Canada
Established in 1975, League Data is a credit union-owned cooperative fintech that helps Canadian credit unions stay independent and modernize through technology services—providing shared infrastructure, systems and expertise to help institutions serve their members effectively.

Through its cooperative model, League Data enables credit unions to benefit from scale, increased buying power and access to technology capabilities that would be difficult to build independently. This approach allows individual institutions to maintain their independence and community focus, while operating on a shared, modern technology foundation.
Today, League Data supports credit unions across the four Atlantic provinces—Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island. It serves a combined 320,000 members through 130 branches.

Recognizing the limitations of legacy infrastructure and the need to prepare for future industry developments, League Data led a coordinated core banking modernization across its network in 2021. This included selecting and implementing a modern cloud-native platform to support long-term innovation, regulatory readiness and interoperability across the cooperative. The modernization program successfully converted 37 credit unions in 15 months.
CAPE BRETON CREDIT UNION
About the customer
Headquartered in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Credit Union (CBCU) is a full-service co-operative financial institution with a history spanning nearly 100 years. Originally formed in 1932 to serve local steelworkers, the organization has evolved through growth and consolidation–including the 2017 merger of Steel Centre Credit Union and Coady Credit Union—to become the institution it is today. As a member-owned co-operative, CBCU operates under the principle that its customers are its owners, giving them a direct voice in governance and decision-making.

The credit union provides a comprehensive suite of financial products, including personal and commercial accounts, mortgages, and wealth management services. Today, the credit union serves a growing membership of approximately 5,800 across Cape Breton.
The challenge
Moving beyond a system built for the past
For decades, CBCU relied on a legacy system that supported traditional transactions but began to show its age as the financial landscape shifted toward digital-first experiences.
As the pace of change accelerated, the credit union faced growing pressure to keep up with industry developments such as Real-Time Rail (RTR), Open Banking, and ISO 20022 standards—which would be difficult, if not impossible, to support on its existing infrastructure. This was further compounded by the imminent sunsetting of its core system, adding urgency to the need for a more future-ready foundation.
CBCU required a core that would remove manual processes and workarounds, enable seamless communication across systems and support the rapid development of new products and services. Without modernization, the credit union risked falling behind larger financial institutions.
Through a structured procurement process led by League Data, CBCU and the fintech cooperative determined that adopting a composable, API-first core banking platform was the best way to achieve these goals.
The solution
Mambu and League Data build a modern foundation for growth
Acting as the central technology provider for a group of 37 member-owned credit unions, League Data led a coordinated selection process–bringing its credit union owners, including CBCU, together to invest in and adopt Mambu’s cloud-native, API-first core as the foundation for a more modern, flexible banking architecture.

For CBCU, the priority was to remove manual workarounds, improve connectivity across systems and enable faster rollout of new products and services. For League Data, the focus was on delivering a scalable, shared platform that could support multiple credit unions while reducing the operational and technical burden on individual institutions and providing an ecosystem for future growth and optimization.
League Data provided hands-on guidance, using structured workbooks to define every product parameter–from checking and savings to TFSA and RRSP accounts—and setting up sandbox environments where staff could practice real-life transaction scenarios.

The migration itself, completed in 48 hours, was highly coordinated–moving CBCU from a monolithic setup to a modern composable technology stack with Mambu at its core. Teams from League Data, Mambu and ecosystem partners provided round-the-clock support before and after migration to ensure a smooth transition and accurate data transfer.
The credit union playbook for digital transformation

Legacy cores are holding credit unions back. Even though 82% prioritize digital experiences, only 9% have the tools to deliver it. Our latest playbook shows how to break free from legacy technology, attract the next generation of members, and build a future-proof foundation for growth.

Mambu’s composable, API-first architecture brought these priorities together—providing a flexible, cloud-native foundation that enables seamless data exchange, easier integration with third-party partners, and continuous evolution of products and services across the League Data ecosystem.

Given the scale and criticality of a core banking modernization, CBCU and League Data invested over a year in preparation, training and testing ahead of migration.
Following go-live, CBCU focused on adapting to a more advanced and flexible platform. As teams began working with the new system in day-to-day operations, they identified opportunities to refine processes, improve data accuracy and make better use of the platform’s capabilities, all with continued support from League Data. This phase has become a natural extension of the transformation–helping CBCU evolve how it operates while enabling League Data to further strengthen and scale the platform for credit unions across the region.

“The migration was very well planned. League Data prepared us well, and the transition went smoothly. Mambu is far more advanced than our previous system—particularly in its API capabilities, which are a clear competitive advantage for us. ”
— Shawn Moore, COO, Cape Breton Credit Union
MAMBU AND LEAGUE DATA
A scalable model for credit union modernization
The partnership between League Data and Mambu combines League Data’s deep understanding of the Canadian credit union system and operational delivery model with Mambu’s cloud-native, composable core—creating a scalable foundation that individual credit unions can adopt without managing the complexity themselves.
League Data leads implementation, operations and ongoing support, while Mambu provides the underlying API-first architecture that enables flexibility, interoperability and continuous innovation. This approach allows credit unions like CBCU to adopt modern banking capabilities without the cost, risk or complexity of managing transformation independently—while still retaining full control over how they serve their members.
The impact
Improving efficiency today, enabling new member experiences tomorrow
Following the migration, CBCU quickly began to see the benefits of its decision to modernize.

The most immediate impact has been on the staff. The Mambu platform is significantly more user-friendly, making training for new employees faster and more intuitive than before. Internal feedback has been overwhelmingly positive–described by the team as “Gen-Z approved”. By automating previously manual processes, the credit union is freeing up human capital to focus on what matters most: servicing the membership.

CBCU’s modernization is already enabling new member-facing capabilities.
The credit union can now easily implement and automate loyalty rewards (points) programs for their checking and loan accounts—something that would have required significant manual overhead in its legacy system.

Members can also look forward to increased interoperability across systems as they will be able to view credit card balances directly within their online banking portal–reducing the need for separate logins and lowering friction for members.

These changes reflect a broader shift for CBCU—from maintaining systems to actively building new capabilities.
“The possibilities are endless with a system like Mambu. Mambu created all those doors; right now we have to open the doors and walk in. More membership, more capabilities, more products on the horizon for sure.”

- Jeff Alcoin, Manager of Accounting & IT, Cape Breton Credit Union

Looking ahead
Unlocking new capabilities
“If you combine APIs, Mambu and AI, you start to see how we can automate more processes and make them more effective across the business. ”
— Shawn Moore, COO, Cape Breton Credit Union

With a new modern core in place, CBCU and League Data are now focused on what comes next. The combination of Mambu’s API-first, composable architecture and League Data’s support is enabling the credit union to rethink how it delivers services, manages data and supports its own members.

One area of exploration is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). CBCU is assessing how AI can support internal processes such as reporting, auditing and marketing—areas where better access to all their data and event driven automation can enhance member experience, drive efficiency and improve decision-making.

Because Mambu is built for the future, CBCU can now "flip a switch" to adopt new innovations in their products and services, ensuring they remain a competitive force in the Atlantic Canada region for the next 100 years.
A regional blueprint for digital transformation

Partnering with Mambu, League Data has created a scalable, shared model for core banking modernization—supporting 37 credit unions in moving away from legacy systems to a unified, cloud-native foundation. CBCU is one example of how this model translates into real impact at the individual credit union level—combining shared infrastructure with local flexibility.
